Climate change as a driver of emerging risks for food and feed safety, plant, animal health and nutritional quality

Humanity does his part, but climate change plays a key role in determinate new risks for feed-food safety, plant, animal health and nutritional quality (EFSA_Climate change as a driver of emerging risks for food and feed safety, plant, animal health and nutritional quality, June 2020).

According to the group of researchers, agricultural and livestock production can be subjected to many environmental factors such as temperature, rainfall, humidity levels and soil with effects on:

– dominance and persistence of various parasites, fungi, viruses, vectors and invasive species, harmful to plant and animal health
– risk of #mycotoxins contamination in cereals with an increased susceptibily of the plants
– distribution and survival of #bacteria including Salmonella and Campylobacter
– changes in #feedquality and in physiological processes (thermal distress and methane production) with consequent impair feeding, growth, reproduction and milk production
– extention of the forage growing season and decrease forage quality, with important variations due to rainfall changes

The challenge of New Feed Team is to consider the global climate scenario and to evolve products to better respond to the changing world!
